Biotechonmy stories on TV and radio

Bio-economy should include everywhere. Therefore, the TV broadcast Vides fakti on January 9th RTU IESE researchers said that from algae can produce biogas. Therefore, this is being studied at the institute, to allow replace from natural gas to biogas as an alternative. In Latvia there is available in a variety of types of algae in the sea and rivers, and, in view of the fact that they are not used properly, clearly could have been high-quality resource in the future and not even remote.

LR1 broadcast Zināmais nezināmajā on January 14 participated IESE director and Professor Dagnija Blumberga and Professor Gatis Bažbauers who told that the bio-economy and economy just does not reflect what is biotechonomy, therefore it is a new concept – biotechonomy. It takes into account many aspects of resource extraction start to even a product with a higher added value. These aspects are environmental, economic, technological and socio-economic.

Positive story of biotechonomy

It is one very important fact, which took place during the implementation of the project. This project is estimated to and The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development is writing about it in their Project stories. This means that the need for a biotechonomy is heard and its open opportunities to develop and produce products with a higher added value. As has already been mentioned during the project there was created study course Biotechonomy which was accessible for full-time studies and in online. The course was positively evaluated from all its members.

Final event of the study course “Biotechonomy”

Institute of Energy Systems and Environment (Riga Technical University – RTU) organized closing event of the study course “Biotechonomy” on 27th of April in 2016.  Event was held in the framework of a development of a training course and study program module „Socio-economic aspects of the climate technology for bioeconomy sector”. This project has been implemented with the support of European Economic Area Financial Mechanism.

Event has been organized for the course participants and authors of the book “Biotehonomika” to not only analyze but also celebrate the great work that has been done.

At the beginning professor Dagnija Blumberga thanked to everyone who participated in the study course. After introduction IESE scientific assistant Antra Kalnbaļķīte presented survey results on study course evaluation. Average score is 8.3 (out of 10). This indicates that participants are satisfied with the course content, presentations and overall performance.

Objective of biotechonomy is to develop entrepreneurship where bioresources are used to produce high added value products. Environmental, economic, socioeconomic and technological aspects need to be taken into account in each production step. By taking into account these principles Environmental Engineering Master’s student Maksims Feofilovs introduced everyone to innovative food product. He presented his first step in biotechonomy project – biscuit production from earthworm flour protein powder. He explained sustainability of the project climate change mitigation aspects and impact on the environment.

Study course participators received certificates. Study course has been attended by representatives of the Saeima, ministries, state institutions, as well as by students, scientific and academic staff from RTU and other universities in Latvia and by representatives of non-governmental organizations and enterprises. Best participants received book “Biotehonomika”. Authors received a special recognition from colleague Egīls Dzelzītis (The Faculty of Building and Civil Engineering, RTU).

Authors and online course participants had a chance to meet in person and share opinions about online course. Discussion showed that online course is advantageous to those who live outside Riga. Gratitude and positive atmosphere will encourage authors to continue working on biotechonomy.

Biotechonomy in online!

Institute of Energy Systems and Environment invites everyone who is interested to participate in the online study course Biotechonomy.

Biotechonomy is a story about local bioresources and technological solutions for their extraction, preparation, treatment and processing. Study course includes analysis of climate, environmental, economic and socioeconomic aspects of biotechonomy implementation.
